Director’s Statement
Details is a story about Amelia, who seems to have it all: intelligence, success, beauty. One night at a hotel bar, she starts a conversation with Dan, a handsome stranger, and they totally seem to hit it off, but dark flashbacks from her childhood stop Amelia from fully enjoying the date. Remembering how her mother would abandon her and her father to go out and see other people, Amelia has to choose between being a “proper” woman she promised her dad to be and her natural desire to charm.
The look of the film
Since Amelia’s problem is psychological, it was very important for me to tell the story through her eyes to let the audience in her head. The visual language of the film is developed through signature déjà vu transitions from real life to flashbacks, where a particular visual moment in the present sparks a similar visual memory from the past. To distinguish between the two, the present scenes are all very smooth and cinematic, while the flashbacks are all handheld and slightly washed out, as Amelia remembers them as very chaotic moments she wasn’t in control of.
Sound design
The battle between Amelia’s two desires is expressed through two main melodies. The dark suggestive melody represents Amelia’s side of lust and craving attention, while the light innocent melody brings her back to her childhood promise of being a “proper” woman. In the end, these two melodies merge into a beautiful rich tune as Amelia realizes that both desires are a part of her personality and she can control them instead of trying to fight them one at a time.
Costume and make up design
The main color of the movie is red, as it represents Amelia’s desire to charm. Throughout the flashbacks we see Amelia’s mother using red lipstick before she goes out, and it becomes grown Amelia’s ritual to put on red lipstick before embracing her darker lustful side. While other characters wear various colors, Amelia stays in the warm red palette as I wanted to keep her the visual center of attention.
