Director’s Statement
We live in the age of social media: everyone and everything is just a click away. Being part of social media means that your past stays online forever, and what you say online now may backfire in the future.
When I read the script for All In Favor, I was immediately drawn to the theme of being defined by your past and #CancelCulture. Imagine if you found out that your favorite Professor you looked up to was being accused of posting a highly controversial tweet 5 years ago. Would you vote to fire them? I wanted to be impartial in telling the story and present both sides of the argument, leaving the choice up to the audience.
Visually, I wanted to express two ideas:
First, there are always going to be people with opposing views. We used black-and-white voting stones to represent the extreme ends of the spectrum: those who think that we should be held accountable for our past and those who think that we all deserve a second chance and should not be defined by our past.
Second, having opposite views doesn’t make us enemies. On the contrary, if we want to solve social issues, we need to start talking to, and, most importantly, listening to people with opposing views. We are all in this together, and I wanted to create that welcoming feel with a soft warm color palette, and some chill indie-style music.
I really hope that this show continues the discussion around social media privacy and political correctness.
